Dorset Recovery Group and Motor Services
The cambelt (also known as a timing belt) is an absolutely critical component in petrol or diesel engines. It synchronises the crankshaft and camshaft so that the engine’s valves open and close at exactly the right time. If the cambelt fails, the engine timing is lost, which can cause catastrophic internal damage to pistons, valves, or other engine components.
Many manufacturers recommend changing or at least checking the cambelt by a certain mileage or after a number of years. Typical recommended replacement intervals may range from 40,000 to 100,000 miles, or every 4-6 years, depending on vehicle make, model, and usage.
Failing to replace the cambelt when required can lead to belt failure, which in turn may result in engine seizure, valves striking pistons, or other serious damage, often leading to very costly repairs.
Here is what you can expect when you choose us:
1. Comprehensive diagnostic check
We inspect the cambelt condition plus associated components (tensioners, pulleys, auxiliary belts, water pump etc.) and check for signs of wear, age or damage.
2. Transparent inspection & quote
We’ll assess whether the belt is due (by mileage or years) or shows signs of deterioration (cracks, fraying, missing teeth). We provide a full quote including parts and labour before any work begins.
3. Replacement with quality parts
We use high-quality or OEM-spec cambelt kits including belt, tensioners/pulleys, and where applicable replace the water pump (often driven by the same belt). This helps avoid redoing work later, since many manufacturers recommend replacing the water pump at the the same time.
4. Precision installation
Our technicians align the camshaft and crankshaft to factory specifications, ensuring correct engine timing. It requires special tools and careful alignment.
5. Testing & verification
After replacement we run the engine, check timing, inspect belt alignment, check auxiliary belt tensions, and ensure everything is functioning properly with no unusual noise or vibrations.
6. Guarantee & peace of mind
We stand by our workmanship. After the job, you’ll have a properly timed engine and restored reliability, avoiding risk of sudden cambelt failure.
Here are signs to watch for:
How long does a cambelt replacement take?
Depends on the vehicle make/model, but it’s not a quick job. It often takes several hours (sometimes a full day) because many engine components must be removed to access the the belt, camshaft/cam cover, water pump etc.
Can I drive with a worn belt until it breaks?
We strongly advise against it. Cambelts wear with time as well as mileage. As some belts age (even with low mileage), degradation of rubber can cause cracking. If it snaps, the damage is often severe and expensive.
Should I also replace other parts?
Yes — in many cases it’s cost-effective to replace tensioners, pulleys, and water pump at the same time because they share the belt drive or are in the same area. That avoids repeated labour costs later.
